Water Supply Monitoring for Urban Local Bodies

Challenges

Municipal Administration needed a system for day-to-day monitoring of Urban Local Bodies Water Supply from source (Ground Water/Surface Water) and report the frequency with which water is supplied in liters per capita per day (LPCD) across all wards in an ULB. All 135 ULBengineers across the State of Tamil Nadu, used to send static report documents on the amount of water supplied to the various locations, to the Municipal Administration on a daily basis. Static reporting had issues in tracking the current supply status and past trend of water supply. Ability to identify decreasing trend in water supply was weakened.

Solution Offered

A SharePoint Portal was develop for manual data entry by 135 municipal engineers across the state of Tamil Nadu as a daily routine. Water Supply data capturing included quantity of water drawn from various sources, water quality parameters, supply disruption issues and tank maintenance scheduling. Data captured on SharePoint Portal was synchronized online with a companion Tablet Application for Municipal Administration to visualize the water supply data from SharePoint Portal. The Tablet Application was developed with ULB / District / Region filtering of Water Supply Status in LCPD (Liters Per Capita Per Day), Source Supply in MLD (Million Liters per Day), Water Quality Parameters – Chlorine Level, E.coli, TDS, Total Hardness, Fluorides, PH and Turbidity.

Business Impact

The SharePoint portal and the companion Tablet application helped the municipal administration to continuously monitor and evaluate the ULB water supply services. Increased efficiency in reporting water supply disruption issues and swift corrective actions monitoring. Regular collection and maintenance of water supply data led to a history of data which allowed the quick identification of seasonal variation in the source supply.
